Around Our Table: We’re Moving (part 1)

Last week I did not get our table post up. It’s because I was waiting on news. And we just got it.

But lets start here:

This past July Beau and I went to L.A.

While part of it was a vacation the other part was a secret mission. Could this be our new home? You see, whispers of Beau’s new assignment were buzzing and L.A. kept coming up.

We knew a lot about the west coast but nothing about L.A. So we decided to go see for ourselves.

We got to walk the colorful streets of Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach and eat some seriously delicious pizza.

We stepped into cute little pubs and bars and sipped on drinks.

We went to muscle beach and Beau did a muscle up because, of course:

We went to Manhattan Beach with sushi in hand and had a picnic and then fell asleep on the cool sand.

We also got into L.A. traffic every morning at 6:00am, 7:00am and 8:00am and drove to L.A. Air Force base. We drove there from Venice Beach, from Manhattan Beach, from El Segundo.

We got back into the car and drove in L.A. traffic at 5:00pm, 6:00pm and 7:00pm. We drove from the base to potential places we would live. We even drove to downtown L.A. at 7:00pm on a Friday night. Beau handled the traffic like a pro – weaving in and out all the lanes. Reading the traffic like he was reading a book.

We stopped and drank coffee at some of my favorite places.

We had so many different kinds of food I thought Beau might be getting on the plane without me:

We fell in love with the culture, the beauty, the pace. Then we came home. I called a friend to tell her all about it and she said something I didn’t realize,

“You sound so refreshed. You sound alive.”

She was right. While I know there are a lot of people who have told us all the hard things we’ll encounter in L.A., Beau and I saw past those things to a lot that is beautiful there. And while we know there will be hard things in L.A. I am reminded that there have been difficult, uncomfortable things everywhere we’ve lived. All of them different kinds of hard and all of them bursting with different kinds of beauty.

Two days ago we received official orders for Beau’s next assignment.

We’re moving to L.A. in early 2016.

Just a few weeks after we came back from L.A. my girl from West Meets South posted this: 3 Things to Do with Your Besties in L.A.

She lives by L.A., in fact she has lived in L.A. and she just loved it!

We’re excited, we’re nervous, we’re hopeful.

As a military wife I’ve been told a lot that, “I could never do what you do.” All the moving. The constant change of Beau’s job. The deployments…

But you know what, you could do this! You could do this if God called you.

I grew up and lived in the same city for the first 26 years of my life. I lived in two homes my whole childhood. I was so grateful. But then God brought a man into my life that I fell in love with. I wanted to follow him everywhere. Even every 3-4 years. And that’s what we’ve been doing. We’ve clashed loud and bright against beautiful cultures, gorgeous people, some of the richest relationships we’ve ever had. It’s been messy, it’s been deliriously beautiful, it has changed us in stunning ways.

When God calls us to a new place we whisper to each other some of our doubts or sorrows about leaving again and then we put those things in God’s hands and get excited about what He is doing in our lives. We thank Him for knowing exactly where to place us. Some of the places have been like paradise, some of the places have been hard and dark but all of them have been by God’s hand.

As we go to L.A. and embark on a new adventure with a new home, new friends and a new pace of life,

we go knowing that we don’t go alone

God goes with us. He calls us. He prepares us. And then He walks every single step with us.

We hope you’ll come visit! We promise to take you to the beach. To fill your tummy with all the good food. To give you the best caffeine high.

And of course, this goes without mention:

We promise to show you the beauty of L.A. and the people God has there.

Have you been to L.A.? Tell us what you loved! Come on this journey with us?
