Cole LaBrant & John S Grice Travel with Compassion to Bolivia

Last week I received the honor of traveling to Bolivia with John S Grice and Cole LaBrant.

If you know these guys from Instagram or Snapchat then you know that they are in the business of making people smile. When I first heard about them I checked out their Vine channel and could.not.stop.watching. They bring hope with laughter.

It’s also clear that they are about God’s work. They love Him, proclaim Him and are quick to praise Him. In fact, they are so about the work of God that I thought they might want to see what God is up to in Bolivia.

Specifically how God is rescuing children who are living in poverty in Bolivia.
After 7 days with these guys, I learned a thing or two about living and embracing every place God has us.

Here are the top 10 things Cole & John taught me:

1: We should all be hugging a lot more. Especially hugging kids. Hugs are the universal, “Hi, I would like to know you. I am a safe place.” Hugs also crush language and cultural boundaries. More hugs!Sponsor a Child in Bolivia2: When in doubt – show a child you are more like them than unlike them. Grown-ups can sometimes be a little scary. The best way to enter someone’s burning heart is to show them that you really aren’t that different. For Cole, this looked like doing his hair like a few of the girls that were not quite sure about him. Let me tell you, the walls came down.Cole Labrant with Compassion3: Jump in with both feet or don’t jump in at all. Cole and John didn’t just come to observe. They came to fully give of themselves. They showed up every day. Jumping on a plane at 4am every day? No problem. Only 3-5 hours of sleep every night? Not going to worry about it. For them, saying yes meant bringing their full selves to the table every day. Especially because lives are at stake.

4: Jesus was all about children and we should be too. Cole & John are the living example of what Jesus said in Matthew 19:14, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” They were at all times surrounded by kids. Amen.Cole and John in Bolivia with Compassion5: Age ain’t nothing but a number. Listen, God can use us and more importantly, He wants to use us. Whatever we think holds Him back from partnering with us: our age, our influence, our shortcomings…we’re wrong. He made us. He’s going to use us. Let’s trust Him.

6: When God opens a door, show up. I talked with Cole and John a lot about the influence God gave them. The thing they kept reminding me is that God is using this influence to open doors that might never have been opened before and so they are obediently showing up whenever He swings that door open. The thing about God is He is blessing us so we can be a blessing to others.

7: Humble yourself because you’re not really that big of a deal. I’m not going to lie, part of me wondered if fame had gotten to Cole and John’s head. I wondered if they would have a, “Do you know who I am?” mentality on this trip. I could not have been more wrong. They have more of a, “Do you know who I serve?” mentality.  Because of that, no request was too big. Many times I looked over to find them sitting in the dirt with the children. When we stoop low, God is magnified. John and Cole in La Paz Bolivia

8: Joy is important because we have work to do. We saw hard things in Bolivia. We went into homes that were the size of a bedroom but contained multiple families. We listened as mothers explained how they cannot feed their children and stories about their homes being robbed. This is real life and it is excruciatingly hard. But instead of getting overwhelmed with sorrow and grief John and Cole found great hope and joy in what God is doing through Compassion. They rejoiced in the sponsorship program because they saw that it works.

9: We’re here to serve. It’s that simple. We don’t have to complicate it. John and Cole with compassion sponsored children10: We can’t do this alone. Gosh, Cole and John really appreciate you. They talk about their audience like you’re real life friends. And they were so excited to have you journey with them through their social channels to Bolivia. Poverty is a big issue that affects millions of kids worldwide and because of this John and Cole were excited to enlist your help so that we might release more children from poverty in Jesus’ name. Together, we can make a difference.
