And just like that, she’s home!
The past few weeks have been a mix of magic and grief. All the magic goes to this city that I fall for more and more everyday. The people! The food! The lack of parking garages! I am thriving.
Grief because finding a house in the year of our Lord 2022 is trying to break me. We recently were under contract for what I thought was my dream home but had to back out after the inspection because it was ROUGH. Like, “We’re not sure why the seemingly new roof is peeling up?” Or, “Notice there is no running water in the primary bathroom, we’re not sure why… 👀”
What I need to do is feel more like myself in the midst of what feels like a complete free-fall. At first I thought I needed to form new routines. Create new structure. But then I realized I didn’t need to form a routine. I needed to form familiar.
🐄I went and found where my favorite heavy cream is located (even though I have nowhere to put it 🥹).
☕️We go to the same coffee shop so I can see the same baristas.
🛏We packed our own pillows that we’ve been sleeping on.
🥣 I declared Pumpkin Chili Day because now is when I would make the first batch of the season if I was in my own kitchen.
🎯I was feeling a little sad the other day so I went to Target and bought something bright and fun! (This would be familiar to me back in DC but here I’ve been holding off buying anything because NO HOUSE TO PUT IT IN🥲)
Furthermore! I have been to countless Targets deciding on which Target will be mine 😅 Listen I don’t have an address, but I have my Target. Your girl’s going to be just ok. Here’s to the familiar.

This is v good news because the temp in St Louis on Thursday will drop to 68 degrees 🥹 I’ll be making my first batch this Thursday and you can too!! Link to recipe in stories!

How to belong to a new city.
I have spent my adult life living is so many different cities, some cities fit me so well I felt like a puzzle piece slipping into place. Other cities felt like I I was wearing the wrong pair of jeans. We did not fit each other.
But belonging is so much more than adoring a place. I think it’s about respecting a place. The food, the people, the neighborhoods.
We start local. Everywhere we go, we sit at bar tops or cozy up to small business owners or kindly approach neighbors. We look at them wide eyed, we say, “Tell us everything.”
I know what it is like to have someone in my home and feel like my stuff, my food, my way of being is under ridicule. That somehow I am wrong. That they are uncomfortable.
I never want to make someone’s city feel like that.
I can be unfamiliar without being uncomfortable.
I can appreciate something without being obsessed with it.
I can try everything once.
We can invite people over instead of waiting to be invited.
Also obsession is low-key contagious. We’ve already talked to so many people here and they all gush about their city like they’re talking about their first lover (how it’s changed everything for them, how they’ll never forget it).
And now I am also beginning to gush.
When we lived in Hermosa we got bikes. I went from never biking to only ever wanting to bike. We also bought Ray-Ban sunglasses obviously.
When we lived in DC we dropped some of our California wineries and became members of a few local wineries.
Here in St. Louis I heard we’re now Cardinals fans. I can’t wait. Go Cardinals!! Do sports!
And really, it turns out @shannanwrites had it right along, we just start with hello.

We’re here! We made it 🥹 This is our week 1 AirBnB in an area we wanted to check out in St Louis. The first thing, the very first thing I noticed - the people here are SO NICE. The smiles! The hellos! The free coffee from the barista at the coffee shop! Very few things make me feel as at home as a smile and a wave. And it seems St Louis has no shortage of these! 🏡

Are we moving? Or am I just trying to re-create the scene where Chandler and Joey rode into Monica and Rachel’s apartment on that statue thing?
This is a trick question because it’s obviously both🥹 (This is our Peloton by the way.)
We are moving to St Louis! I will miss many things about D.C. but I will not miss all the parking garages. And I will not miss all the lanes that should be merge lanes but to the driver’s utter dismay, no merge lanes. Just like, pop onto the road and hope for the best.
Obviously this move has me wondering very important things about St. Louis like,
🐄Do they carry Horizon Organics heavy whipping cream in their stores? (It has been confirmed that they carry Mateo’s salsa!).
🅿️Do they have room for parking in most places ABOVE GROUND?
🐶How will the people take to a little bear walking around their town?
🪴Do they allow people with questionable plant skills to take home as many plants as they desire?
I am sure I am missing a few critical things that I should be discovering about St Louis but these ones are really on the top of the list. (Naturally.) Tell me everything you know!

“Get Out of Takeout Mode” Roast What’s your

“Get Out of Takeout Mode” Roast
What’s your get-out-of-takeout-mode meal?!
We have been absolutely surviving on takeout🥡We planned for this and leaned into it. The past few weeks have been … a lot. But anytime I know we need to emerge from takeout land to cook-in-this-kitchen-that-exists-in-my-home land, I make this roast.
It’s foolproof and easy to pull together. The leftovers are amazing (and there’s always leftovers) and the meat can be served in so many ways: over rice, in tacos, in sliders, over lettuce …
Ingredients:
3-4 lbs chuck roast
1 (16 oz) jar pepperoncinis
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp fresh cracked black pepper
5 garlic cloves, crushed
Slow Cooker Method:
1. Pat your roast dry and season with salt and pepper.
2. Add roast to the slow cooker and the whole jar of pepperoncinis (including the juice).
3. Add the garlic cloves.
4. Cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 4 hours.
5. The meat is done when it easily shreds with a fork.
Instant Pot Method:
1. Pat your roast dry and season with salt and pepper.
2. Turn Instant Pot to Saute. Add 1 TBS oil.
3. When shimmering, add the pot roast. Brown each side, about 2-3 minutes per side (optional).
4. Add garlic cloves and pour in jar of pepperoncinis with juice and 3/4 cup water or beef broth.
5. Close and lock the lid. Make sure the vent is on “Seal.”
6. Set Instant Pot to “Manual” and program for 75 minutes.
7. Allow the Instant Pot to depressurize for about 10 minutes. Move vent to “Venting” and open lid.

Just a girl and her steak 🤩🥩 I call this You’re Worth it Ribeye because we don’t need to wait for a special occasion to eat our favorite food. What’s special is you, not the occasion. You get to eat a 24 oz ribeye or a fancy cheese plate or that craft popcorn on an average Tuesday. What is your fancy (but I’ll eat it on a Tuesday) food?!

In a study it was found that 10 out of 10 times @shannanwrites will show up with her homemade pickles 🤩 She drove to Michigan during the shoot for The Cook’s Book and jumped in…chopping, stirring, and cleaning like this was as much her book. I could have cried. We munched on her pickles and made homemade Crunchwrap supremes and marveled at how food can bring people together. Officially here to let you know I wrote a cookbook 🥹 I’ve been v casual about announcing this because after I signed the contract I thought, “who do I think I am?” And “how does one extend a deadline by 3 years?” And “does this cookbook need to have all the recipes? The Quickest BBQ Chicken Salad 🥗
We have absolutely been surviving over here on this
salad🥹 It’s quick and it is so satisfying!
🌽Fresh corn cooks in the IP in ONE minute. Add 1 cup water. Steamer basket. Two ears of corn. High pressure for one minute. That’s it! Run your knife down the sides of the corn while it is in the upright position to get the kernels off!
🍗Pre-shredded rotisserie chicken (that’s right, I bought it pre-shedded. I have zero time for picking chicken off a rosterseie these days. ZERO. TIME.)
🧅Diced red onion
🫘Black beans from a can
🌿Fresh cilantro (fresh herbs in salads make me so happy)
🧀 Pepperjack cheese
🥑Avocado
🌮Crushed tortilla chips for CRUNCH!
🧂Salt!
Drizzle with BBQ sauce and herb dressing! Ok, byeeeee!

Find Me By the Water Cocktail/Mocktail 💦
This Sunday brought to you by the most refreshing poolside/beachside/bathtub drink:
Find Me By the Water🏖
🍋2 oz. Seedlip Citrus or gin
🍹Juice from 1/2 lime
💦Elderflower tonic water
🍊2-3 drops Orange bitters from All the Bitter
In an insulated cup filled with ice, add Seedlip or gin and juice from lime. Top with elderflower tonic and stir to combine. Top with 2-3 drops of bitters. Find water. Enjoy!

Magic dressing! 🪄 This dressing is good on EVER

Magic dressing! 🪄
This dressing is good on EVERYTHING!
I always have a batch of this in the refrigerator to make any quick meal a little extra. Perfect on nachos, tacos, salads, scrambled eggs, turkey burgers, literally anything that needs just a hint of citrus and heat!
Chipotle Honey Dressing!
👉1/2 cup olive oil
👉1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
🍯3 TBS honey
🌶1 small chili in adobo
👉2 tsp adobo sauce (start here and add more adobo sauce if you want more heat)
🧄2 garlic cloves
👉1/2 tsp cumin
🧂1/2 tsp salt
👉Juice from 1 lime
💦2 TBS cold water
Add all ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth!
After blending, taste. If you want more heat, add more adobo sauce (by the tsp). If you want a lot more heat, add another chili. If the dressing is too spicy, add another 1 TBS of honey!

Last Tuesday was a very normal Tuesday until it wasn’t. Until the phone call.
One emergency plane ticket purchase later and I was traveling at 4am on a now not-average Wednesday.
The few days I was there are a blur. I learned the layout of an emergency room and I learned that I did not like this. To know the hallways so well.
To know that the best snack machine is on the second floor.
The best drinks are on the first floor.
Everything beeps everywhere all the time. And everyone just walks around like this is normal.
The elevators on the ICU floor take FOREVER.
The front desk lady on the night shift thinks it’s weird I wave to her every time I walk by. The daytime front desk lady loves it. She waves back.
The nearby Starbucks will always think when I ask for heavy cream that I only want the cream to whisper at my drink. Because this Starbucks doesn’t know me because I am not supposed to be here. But they’ll give me a separate small cup of just cream. And I’ll take a photo of it in front of a hospital.
One thing that is not new to me, holding hands with my dad will always comfort me. He will always be the comforter even when I think I was getting to him to provide the comfort.
I’m back home and everything is fine and everyone is healing. And I am so grateful. So immensely, profoundly grateful.
This morning I was thinking how quickly everything can change in just an instant. But Hope, she’s so brazen, she just snuck into my spiral and she said, “Yes, everything can change in an instant. And sometimes the change is scary. But sometimes the change is miraculous. Sometimes everything can change in an instant for the better.” And I am grateful for that too. That an instant can hold heartbreak and sometimes it can hold so much goodness you’ll wonder if you can bear the weight of it💛
